This single question sets the tone for your entire interview. A great answer creates momentum — a weak one puts you on the defensive for the next 45 minutes. Here are proven answer templates for every career stage.
Why Interviewers Ask This Question
They're evaluating three things:
1. Communication skills — Can you organize thoughts clearly?
2. Relevance — Do you understand what matters for this role?
3. Self-awareness — Do you know your own strengths?
They're NOT asking for your life story. They want a professional highlight reel.

What NOT to Say
• "I'm a hard worker and a team player" — Everyone says this. It means nothing.
• "My weakness is that I'm a perfectionist" — Interviewers hear this 10x/day.
• "I've been coding since I was 12" — Unless it's directly relevant, skip the origin story.
• "Basically, I'm just looking for a good opportunity" — Too passive. Show direction.
• Starting with "So..." or "Well..." — Start with your name or role.
