Infosys is India's second-largest IT services company and one of the most common destinations for engineering freshers from tier-2 and tier-3 colleges. Infosys has three hiring tracks: the standard Systems Engineer, the Specialist Programmer (SP), and the Digital Specialist Engineer (DSE): each with different difficulty levels and starting salaries. This guide covers all three tracks and what to expect in each.
Infosys hiring tracks and what they offer
Track 1: Systems Engineer (SE): Starting salary ₹3.6–4 LPA. Standard fresher hiring. Least competitive technically. Infosys's mass hiring track. Main product: InfyTQ certification.
Track 2: Specialist Programmer (SP): Starting salary ₹6.25–7 LPA. Higher technical bar. Applicants must clear a more difficult coding round with medium-level DSA problems. Campus-focused recruitment at tier-2 colleges.
Track 3: Digital Specialist Engineer (DSE): Starting salary ₹9.5 LPA. Highest technical bar. Requires strong coding skills (competitive programming level). Primarily campus recruitment at IITs, NITs, and BITS. Off-campus DSE is also available through Infosys Hackathons.
InfyTQ: Infosys's online learning and certification platform. Completing InfyTQ Foundation level is a prerequisite for the SE recruitment. The platform teaches basic programming, Python, DBMS, and OOP. Completing it and performing well in the assessment fast-tracks you into the SE process.
Infosys interview process by track
Systems Engineer (SE) process:
- InfyTQ certification (online, self-paced)
- Online aptitude test: Quantitative reasoning, logical reasoning, verbal ability (similar difficulty to Wipro NLTH)
- Pseudocode / reasoning assessment: Pattern-matching, algorithm logic without actual coding
- HR interview: Background verification questions, career goals, relocation willingness, STAR behavioural questions
Specialist Programmer (SP) process:
- Online coding test: 2 coding problems (medium difficulty) in 3 hours + 1 aptitude section
- Technical interview: OOP concepts, data structures, past projects, 1–2 coding questions
- HR interview: Same as SE track
DSE process:
- Coding test: 3 coding problems (medium to hard) + aptitude
- Technical interview 1: Deep DSA discussion, time/space complexity, project walkthrough
- Technical interview 2: System design basics + advanced topics
- HR interview
Technical preparation for Infosys
For SE track: Focus on aptitude (TCS NQT or Wipro NLTH level), basic programming (Python or Java: output-based questions), OOP fundamentals (encapsulation, inheritance, polymorphism), and SQL basics (SELECT, joins, GROUP BY).
For SP track: Medium-level LeetCode problems (arrays, strings, trees, hashmaps). OOP concepts at interview depth (design patterns basics). DBMS (ER diagrams, normalisation, SQL queries). CS fundamentals (OS: process vs thread, scheduling; networking: OSI model, HTTP basics).
For DSE track: Competitive programming background: complete at minimum NeetCode 150. System design basics. Java or C++ at a high level of fluency. Core CS: OS, networking, DBMS at deep interview level.
Most-reported topics at Infosys interviews:
- OOP: 4 pillars, abstract class vs interface, method overloading vs overriding
- SQL: write a query to find nth highest salary, self-join for manager-employee
- Data structures: reverse a linked list, detect cycle, binary search tree operations
- OS: process vs thread, deadlock conditions
- Networking: OSI model, TCP vs UDP, what happens when you type a URL
Infosys compensation 2026
Infosys 2026 fresher packages:
- SE (Systems Engineer): ₹3.6–4 LPA (base only; PF, gratuity, bonus bring total slightly higher)
- SP (Specialist Programmer): ₹6.25–7 LPA
- DSE (Digital Specialist Engineer): ₹9.5 LPA
Note: Infosys has historically had delays in joining dates. Students placed in campus 2024 have reported waiting 6–12 months for actual joining. Factor this into your planning if you have other offers.
Career growth at Infosys: The SE track leads to Systems Engineer → Senior Systems Engineer → Technology Analyst → Technical Lead. Typical promotions take 2–3 years per level. Engineers looking for faster growth typically move to product companies after 1–2 years at Infosys.

Practice freeInfosys Hackwithinfy and Digital Specialists
HackWithInfy is Infosys's annual national coding contest open to final-year engineering students. Top performers in the preliminary and finals rounds receive direct SDE offers ranging from 9.5 to 11 LPA. The contest uses three progressively harder coding problems and runs on the HackerRank platform, with past problems covering graph traversal, dynamic programming on intervals, and greedy algorithms. Students who rank in the top 100 receive Super Coders designation and fast-track to the Systems Engineer Specialist role. Even if you do not win, participation demonstrates initiative on your resume and sometimes results in SP track invitations directly from Infosys campus placement teams.
Infosys Technical Interview: Real Question Patterns
Infosys technical interviews commonly open with questions on your final year project followed by deep dives into specific technologies used. Expect questions like explaining the difference between abstract classes and interfaces in Java, writing a SQL query to find the second highest salary without using LIMIT or OFFSET, and describing how HTTP request-response cycles work. For SP candidates, interviewers often add questions on time complexity analysis, Linux process management, and REST API design principles. Interviews typically last 30 to 45 minutes and are conducted over Zoom or Microsoft Teams. Interviewers are practicing engineers from Infosys delivery units, not HR professionals, so technical depth matters more than scripted answers.
Lateral Hiring at Infosys: DSE and Senior Roles
Experienced professionals with 2 to 8 years can apply to Infosys through the careers portal for Digital Specialist Engineer or Senior Systems Engineer roles. Lateral packages for DSE range from 12 to 18 LPA depending on specialization in cloud platforms like AWS or Azure, data engineering, or full-stack development with React and Node. The lateral process involves a HackerEarth coding screen, one technical interview, and an HR round. Infosys runs lateral drives quarterly, and Naukri and LinkedIn are primary sourcing channels. Reference from existing Infosys employees can reduce time to first interview call from 4 weeks to under 2 weeks, as internal referrals are prioritized in the ATS queue.
