Cognizant hires thousands of freshers every year under its GenC (Generation Cognizant) programme, making it one of the most accessible IT service company entry points for Indian graduates. The process has evolved significantly: the new GenC and GenC Elevate tracks have distinct profiles worth understanding before you begin.
GenC vs GenC Elevate: Two Tracks
Cognizant runs two distinct fresher programmes, and confusing them leads to misaligned preparation.
GenC (standard track): core IT services roles, primarily maintenance and support of existing client systems. Starting salary: ₹4–4.5 LPA. Selection: aptitude test + HR round (no separate coding test for many campuses). GenC Elevate (higher track): digital, cloud, and analytics roles. Starting salary: ₹5–5.5 LPA. Selection: aptitude test + coding test + technical interview + HR round. GenC Pro (for select campuses): the highest-paying track at ₹6.5–8 LPA, targeting premium engineering colleges. Higher coding difficulty and system design basics.
Cognizant Online Assessment
The Cognizant GenC online assessment covers three sections.
Aptitude (16Q, 16min): standard quantitative and logical reasoning: number series, data sufficiency, logical deductions. Verbal (25Q, 25min): reading comprehension, para jumbles, error identification. English grammar basics are sufficient. Coding (2Q, 45min): two coding problems: easy to medium difficulty. Arrays, strings, basic sorting, or simple recursion. The coding section is new (added in 2023 for most tracks): prepare 20–30 easy-level LeetCode problems. No negative marking in aptitude and verbal; approach strategically.
Technical Interview for GenC Elevate
GenC Elevate technical interviews cover CS fundamentals with a focus on your preferred programming language.
OOP: the four pillars with Java/Python examples. Classes and objects, inheritance, polymorphism, encapsulation. DBMS: SQL queries (SELECT with WHERE, GROUP BY, HAVING, JOIN), normalisation (1NF–3NF), primary vs foreign key. Data structures: arrays, linked lists, stacks, queues: definition and use case for each. No complex algorithm problems are expected: the goal is CS fundamentals clarity. Your project: prepare a 3-minute project explanation covering problem statement, tech stack, your specific contribution, and what you would improve.
HR Round at Cognizant
Cognizant's HR round is relatively straightforward but has some Cognizant-specific elements to prepare for.
Standard questions: Tell me about yourself, Strengths and weaknesses, Where do you see yourself in 5 years, Why Cognizant? Cognizant-specific questions: 'What do you know about Cognizant's Trizetto or Collaborative Intelligence practice?': research one specific Cognizant business unit or client vertical before your interview. 'Are you comfortable with any technology?': Cognizant assigns freshers to projects based on client need; answer 'Yes, I am adaptable' confidently. Bond/service agreement: confirm whether your batch has a bond requirement: terms have changed across years.
Joining and Training
Understanding Cognizant's onboarding process helps set expectations after the offer.
Training programme (CTAP): all GenC freshers go through a 2–3 month training programme at Cognizant's training facilities in Coimbatore, Hyderabad, or Chennai. Programming fundamentals (Java or Python), Agile basics, cloud fundamentals, and Cognizant's delivery methodologies. Project allocation: after training, you are allocated to a project based on business need. Location preferences are noted but not guaranteed. Pro tip: during CTAP training, express interest in specific technologies and build relationships with trainers: these connections sometimes influence project allocation.

Practice freeGenC Salary and Offer Negotiation
Cognizant GenC offers a fixed CTC of approximately 4 LPA for the standard track, while GenC Elevate candidates receive around 5.5 to 6 LPA at joining. These numbers include a performance-linked variable component that typically disburses annually. Offer letters are issued via the iConnect portal and require acceptance within a stipulated window: missing it without confirmation can lead to offer cancellation. Negotiation is not standard for fresher GenC offers, but candidates placed via campus placement officers at NITs or IIITs sometimes receive a slightly adjusted variable component. The joining bonus for GenC Elevate is typically a one-time 25,000 rupees disbursed after completing the initial training period.
GenC Elevate Technical Round Preparation
The GenC Elevate technical interview is conducted by a panel of two engineers and typically lasts 45 to 60 minutes. Expect questions on object-oriented programming concepts, inheritance, polymorphism, and abstraction, as well as SQL queries involving joins, aggregations, and subqueries. Data structures such as linked lists, stacks, and binary trees are frequently tested via whiteboard-style questions. One coding problem, usually solvable in Java or Python, is given with a 20-minute time limit. Candidates from non-CS branches who have completed NPTEL courses in programming or data structures consistently perform better. Demonstrating familiarity with SDLC phases and Agile sprint terminology also impresses panellists at this stage.
Life After Joining: First Year at Cognizant
New GenC employees undergo the GenC Learning Program, a structured 60 to 90 day residential or hybrid training held at campuses in Chennai, Pune, Bengaluru, or Hyderabad. The curriculum covers a primary technology stack assigned based on project allocation: typically Java with Spring Boot, .NET, or Python with Django. Assessment scores during training directly influence project placement and the band within which you are graded. GenC Elevate trainees receive slightly more challenging project assignments and are exposed to client-facing modules earlier. Employees who score in the top quartile during training are fast-tracked to higher-value accounts, which can meaningfully accelerate the path to a promotion and salary revision at the 18-month mark.
